Specialty and Outpatient Services
Outpatients come to The Institute
of Living to participate in various individual and group
therapies. Sessions may be scheduled on a regular or intermittent basis. An outpatient
may, for example, visit a therapist at a convenient time for one or more sessions a week,
or come as infrequently as once a month. Outpatients have access to The Institute's broad
spectrum of professional experts in various well-organized treatment approaches.
Outpatient therapy at The Institute is brief, focused, and goal-directed, with
measurable and objective results. Treatment may involve only the patient or include other
family members as well, and is generally limited in duration. Ongoing evaluation ensures
that the treatment plan keeps pace with the patient's progress and evolving needs.
Most treatment plans include a built-in goal that, when reached, signals the end of
therapy. Patients with more persistent problems may require some form of treatment on a
continuing basis. Those on medication will usually be monitored for some time with or
without concomitant therapy.

The Center for Couples and
Families at The Institute of Living is a service designed to help
families, couples and individuals who are experiencing difficulties with
interpersonal issues. This includes people who are struggling with
psychological and interpersonal problems, but not necessarily with a
specific mental disorder. The major emphasis is on brief treatment.
Services are available to persons experiencing stress due to life cycle events
such as marriage, birth of a first child or additional children, separation,
divorce, remarriage, step-parenting, social adjustment tensions, and/or
career/work related pressures. Typical problems include balancing the emotional
needs of one’s children with the demands of one’s career/job, handling an aging
parent, managing time, and decreasing stress. These services are available to
the entire community, but could prove to be especially helpful to families who
are dealing with the hospitalization of an individual family member. In such
cases, the focus would be on helping families understand and cope with emotional
illness, especially if the illness is prolonged.
